House Passes: Stop Illegal Entry Act

Written by Samuel Sotelo | Oct 3, 2025 3:54:43 PM

On September 11th, 2025, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Stop Illegal Entry Act, a bill that would dramatically increase penalties for migrants who reenter the United States after deportation. If enacted, this legislation would impose mandatory prison sentences ranging from 5 to 10 years on individuals who attempt to reenter unlawfully.

What the Bill Means

The bill is presented as a deterrent to repeated unlawful entry. Supporters argue it will strengthen border security and reduce the number of migrants returning after removal orders. Opponents warn it could lead to overcrowded prisons, harm families, and punish individuals who may be fleeing danger or seeking to reunite with loved ones.

Why This Matters for Immigrant Families

For many families in Southwest Florida and across the country, this development highlights the increasing risks of unauthorized reentry. Harsh mandatory sentencing could separate families for years and add new barriers for individuals trying to regularize their status.

Bill Status & Next Steps

Although the House has passed the Stop Illegal Entry Act (H.R. 3486), it is not yet law. For it to become law, the Senate must review, debate, and vote on the bill. If the Senate approves it (with or without amendments), the bill then goes to the President’s desk for signature or veto.

If the Senate rejects the bill or returns it with amendments, Congress would need to reconcile the differences before final passage. Until that process is complete, the proposal remains only a legislative possibility and is not enforceable.
