Every June, the United States pauses to honor one of its most vibrant and resilient communities: Caribbean Americans. At DeMine Immigration Law Firm, this is not an abstract observance. It is personal. It is the families we see in our offices every week, the journeys we have had the privilege of being part of, and the community we are proud to call our own right here in Southwest Florida.
Caribbean Americans have shaped this country since its very founding. Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, was born in the Caribbean. Colin Powell, Cicely Tyson, Harry Belafonte, and Sidney Poitier are among the many celebrated figures of Caribbean descent whose contributions are permanently woven into American history.
But the legacy of Caribbean Americans does not live only in history books. It lives in the neighborhoods, job sites, schools, and churches of Southwest Florida, where an estimated 40,000 Haitian immigrants alone have built their lives alongside tens of thousands of Cuban, Dominican, Jamaican, Trinidadian, and other Caribbean families who have made this region their home.
In Lehigh Acres, in Fort Myers, in Bonita Springs, they are construction workers and healthcare providers, restaurant owners and educators, parents raising the next generation of Floridians. They are neighbors. And they deserve to be celebrated as such.
Immigration is never just paperwork. It is a decision made at a kitchen table, on a phone call with a parent, in a quiet moment of fear or of hope. The stories behind every case are not burdens. They are acts of love.
Caribbean families come to the United States carrying everything they have. Their culture, their faith, their resilience, and their belief that the sacrifice is worth it: for their children, for their families, for a future that feels possible. That belief is something we respect deeply. It is the reason this work matters.
Caribbean American Heritage Month was officially designated in 2006 through the advocacy of Dr. Claire Nelson and the Institute of Caribbean Studies, bringing long-overdue national recognition to a community that has contributed to every part of American society for centuries. That is something we never lose sight of.
DeMine Immigration Law Firm was founded by Indera DeMine, a Board Certified immigration attorney born in Guyana. She did not just study immigration law. She lived it. That is not something you learn in a classroom. It shapes how you listen to a client, how you understand what is at stake, and why you fight as hard as you do.
When a Caribbean family walks into one of our offices, they are not walking into a firm that sees them as a case number. They are walking into a firm built by someone who understands exactly where they come from.
Born in Guyana. Built a law firm in Southwest Florida. Fighting every day for the families who deserve someone in their corner.
